Periodontal / Gum treatment
Dental plaque is the main culprit behind majority of the gum problems that one might face. With regular dental cleaning and twice-daily brushing and flossing, dental plaque accumulation can be minimized. Any compromise with oral hygiene can become a breeding ground for colonies of bacteria. These bacteria can cause inflammation in the gums leading to swelling of the gums. The slightest provocation, such as during brushing, can lead to gum bleeding which is the initial stage of ‘gingivitis’. If not treated, this inflammation can lead to bone loss around the tooth – an advanced stage of gum disease called ‘periodontitis’. Eventually, your teeth can become loose and may require an extraction if not treated in a timely manner.
What are the signs and symptoms of gum disease?
-Bleeding from gums during eating, brushing, or flossing
-Puffiness or swelling in the gums
-Bad breath from the mouth,
-Conditions such as toothache, bright red gums, receding gums, tenderness in the gums, loose teeth, sensitive teeth and occasional bad taste in the mouth.
How is gum disease treated?
At RelyOn Dental, Dr. Seema will carry our extensive examination that includes but not limited to diagnostic x-rays to assess level of bone loss, periodontal charting to check for attachment loss and bleeding tendency of the gums.
The treatment of gum disease depends on the stage of the disease. In the initial phases the progress of disease can be arrested by professional dental cleaning and root planing. This should help remove the plaque and tartar or calculus that has deposited on the tooth and root surface. Your dentist Dr. Seema may prescribe antibiotics depending on the level of bacterial infection. For advanced periodontitis, a guided tissue regeneration surgery or bone grafts may be required.
You can always prevent gum disease by maintaining good oral hygiene. However, if you are experiencing any of the above-mentioned signs and symptoms visit us at RelyOn Dental where you can discuss your treatment options with Dr. Seema and get your oral health restored.
